Assistive Technology

Growth for all students is the key and the main goal for each teacher, school, and school district. How we achieve growth has evolved based on the needs of our students. Therefore, the use of equitable access to websites for all students is important. According to Hughes and Roblyer of Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching “PSLs can assist all teachers in reaching student’s wide-ranging learning needs and support coverage of nonacademic skills that contribute to overall success” (Hughes & Roblyer 2023 pg.149).

Fortunately for us, there are a lot of technological applications to choose from. To choose the application that is right for my classroom, I would use the criteria described by Hughes and Roblyer in Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching Pg. 148. The reading mentioned programs had to be “student-centered, provide adaptive assessments, curriculum matched to state standards, Competency/mastery-based, multiple learning media, and provide data reports on both the individual and the group” (Hughes & Roblyer 2023 pg.148).

I would use PSL/adaptive programs that allow students to work at their own pace. Students with learning disabilities can use headphones to listen and read along to the lessons. The exceptional student can use the test-out option to move on to more advanced lessons. I would, also, use a game like Jeopardy as a drill to enhance the student’s knowledge of vocabulary and key objectives within the curriculum. This game can also be used as a group activity/peer tutoring method and can be adapted to specific items ranging from easy questions for lower-level learners to harder questions for advanced learners.

Thanks for listening!
